Dr Schulam received his medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine. He was awarded a scholarship for the NIH's medical scientist training program and earned a PhD in immunology. He did his surgical internship and urological training at John's Hopkins Hospital under Dr. Patrick C. Walsh. At UCLA he is the chief of endourology and laparoscopic surgery and the co-chief of CASIT.
